Every commercial premises must have a fire extinguisher. In fact, the British Standard (BS5306) states that you must be no more than 30 meters from your nearest ‘A’ rated extinguisher. This isn’t to “cover you” as such but it’s to keep the lives of you and your employees safe in the event of a fire. Depending on your premises, you may need different types of units depending on the nature of your business.
Keeping them serviced and maintained helps you as a business owner, achieve peace of mind. Peace of mind that should they be required, your fire protection operates first time, every time!

It’s not the case that you purchase your extinguishers and they’re good forever. It’s extremely important that they’re serviced every single year. Because fire can be such a big killer, keeping your units in perfect working order is vital enough for it to now be part of fire regulations. You must have them serviced annually by a competent person/company.
You can have a number of different maintenance packages to check your extinguisher. We have the following range of services available for you.

What Happens During a Fire Extinguisher Service?
All external parts of your extinguisher are checked during the service. Irrespective of the level of maintenance you have signed up for and your budget. No additional work is carried out without your instruction. However, as an absolute minimum, all of our packages include the following
- Is the Fire Extinguisher in Date?
- Is the visible condition good?
- Are there any signs of tampering?
- Are the weight and pressure correct?
- Is the extinguisher hose in good working order?
- Does the pin work?
- Can you read the instructions clearly?
The results of the service will inform you of which units require replacement. You will also be informed of any extra extinguishers you may need to keep you in line with regulations. As part of our UNIQUE service, we also colour code all of the ‘o’ rings, tags and gauge patches. This makes our servicing visible and allows you to know that the service has been completed thoroughly.
Fire Extinguisher Commissioning
Fire extinguishers do not arrive on site ready commissioned. The reason for this is due to the potential for damage, loss of pressure or discharge during delivery. For this reason, your extinguishers must be commissioned on site.
According to British Safety Standards 5306-3, it’s recommended that the commissioning take place on site, by a competent person. A competent person is someone who is highly trained and experienced in fire safety. You never want to leave your fire safety to chance.
What Does Extinguisher Commissioning Involve?
Before we can sign a unit off as fit for purpose and ready to use, we must commission it. It’s essential that the following items are completed. However, as mentioned above, this is best done by a trained and competent person.
- Attach the discharge nozzle if it isn’t already fitted
- Check the pressure is correct and in the green
- Check the physical condition, looking for obvious transport damage or corrosion.
- Ensure the tamper device is fully intact
- Check the weight of the extinguisher and record it on the maintenance label.
